Shine with Meya
Terms of Use
Last updated: October 30, 2026
The short version
- Families and teachers are welcome to use Shine with Meya to read and learn.
- Meya, her friends, the stories and the pictures belong to the author. Please don’t copy or sell them.
- A parent, guardian or teacher agrees to these terms for the children who use the app.
1. About these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and Mmeyene Jasmine Umoren (“we” or “us”), the maker of the Shine with Meya app (the “app”). By downloading or using the app, you agree to them. The app is made for children, but these terms are for grown-ups: a parent, guardian or teacher accepts them on behalf of the children who use the app. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the app.
2. How you may use the app
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for your family’s enjoyment and learning.
Teachers and schools may also use the app in the classroom, including reading the stories aloud and using the activities with students.
Please don’t:
- copy, share, sell, publish or broadcast the stories, characters, illustrations, recordings or other content outside the app, except as these terms allow;
- use the content to make other products, including merchandise, books, videos or games;
- use the content to train artificial intelligence or machine learning systems;
- copy, change, take apart or try to get the source code of the app, except where the law allows it; or
- use the app in any way that breaks the law.
If you’d like to use Meya or the stories in another way, such as for an event or a school project to share, just ask us at hello@shinewithmeya.com.
3. Who owns Meya and the stories
The app, its name, Meya and her friends, the stories, illustrations, designs, music and recordings are owned by Mmeyene Jasmine Umoren or used with permission, and are protected by copyright and other laws. Using the app doesn’t give you any ownership of them. Meya: The Brave Little Star is a published book by Mmeyene Jasmine Umoren.
4. Your information
Our Privacy Policy explains how the app handles information. In short: there are no accounts, no ads and no tracking, and what you add stays on your device.
5. Purchases
The app is free to download. If we offer stories or other content to buy in the future, purchases will be made through the Apple App Store or Google Play and will follow their terms, including for payments and refunds. We never see your payment details. Purchases will sit behind a grown-up check, so children can’t buy anything on their own.
6. Changes to the app and these terms
We may update the app, add or change stories and features, or stop offering some of them. We may also update these terms. If we make an important change, we will update the date at the top of this page. If you keep using the app after a change, you agree to the new terms.
7. No guarantees
We work hard to make the app safe, kind and fun, but we provide it “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we don’t promise that it will always work without interruptions or mistakes, or that it will suit every child’s needs. Grown-ups should supervise children’s use of devices.
8. Limits on our responsibility
To the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss or damage that comes from using, or not being able to use, the app. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under consumer protection laws that can’t be limited.
9. Ending your use
You can stop using the app at any time by deleting it. If you seriously break these terms, we may end your licence to use the app.
10. Apple App Store
If you downloaded the app from the Apple App Store, you also agree that:
- these terms are between you and us, not Apple, and we (not Apple) are responsible for the app and its content;
- your licence is limited to using the app on Apple devices you own or control, as allowed by the App Store’s Usage Rules;
- Apple has no duty to provide maintenance or support for the app;
- if the app doesn’t meet any warranty that applies to it, you may tell Apple, and Apple may refund the price you paid (if any). To the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty duty for the app;
- we (not Apple) are responsible for handling any claims about the app, including product liability claims, claims that it doesn’t meet legal or regulatory requirements, and consumer protection claims;
- if anyone claims the app infringes their intellectual property rights, we (not Apple) are responsible for looking into, defending, settling and resolving that claim;
- you are not located in a country subject to a government embargo or listed as a terrorist-supporting country, and you are not on any government list of prohibited or restricted parties; and
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
11. The law that applies
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. If you live elsewhere, you may also have rights under the laws where you live.
